Kano – Hawan Daushe

Kano was the second stop for the Expressions Again tour. Workshops took place at the Gidan Makama  Museum, courtesy UK based youth workshop facilitator Olusola Oyeleye. It was a deep cultural experience with children challenged to explore the meaning and significance of the Hawan Daushe festival. Hawan Daushe was introduced to Kano between 1563 & 1499 by Sarkin Kano Muhammadu Rumfa. According to oral tradition, it was first requested by a favorite slave of the Sarki called Daushe who was ill during the Sallah celebration and the Sarki accepted the request to please him. It later became associated with a
visit to Babban Daki the Palace of the Queen Mother. The greatest of all QueenMo thers in pre-colonial Kano was Hauwa the mother of Sarkin Kano Rumfa who is more or less the founder of the Kano Sarauta.
The main children’s workshops took place at the Gidan Makama Museum, a building comprising 11 galleries, made from natural clay dating back to the 15th century. Children had an in-depth insight into Nigerian history and culture. Participating schools were sourced through the British Council, courtesy Elijah Alkali whilst children’s drama filled workshops were facilitated by Olusola Oyeleye. The main artists exhibition took place at the prestigious Emirs Palace in Kano, the outcome a great testimony for Nigerian artistic talent.
