Abuja – Argungu

Abuja was the first stop for the Expressions Again tour. Everything started with a culture and drama experience with artist Nike Okundaye at her art centre in Piwoyi. She hosted artists, facilitators and children in a multi-cultural experience, engaging everyone in a day of textile preparation, wood carving, traditional drumming, dance and drama. This created an ecstatic feeling, with an aftermath of pure joy. There was also a visit to the Abuja Art and Craft Village and the Abuja carnival – experiences of deep cultural significance.
The theme for Abuja was the Argungu Fishing Festival (Fashin Ruwa). This is an annual 4 day event that takes place in the north-west of Nigeria. It attracts a diversity of people from all over the world to witness an event that is a celebration of life. It began in 1934, marking the end of hostilities between 2 warring communities. On the final day of the festival, there is a competition to catch the biggest fish. Thousands take part and the winner receives a large cash prize. Children were inspired by the theme for their creative writing.
The main children’s workshops and artist exhibition took place at Protea Hotel in Asokoro. Children’s workshops were drama filled and dynamic, thanks to UK based facilitator Olusola Oyeleye. The exhibition was a great testimony for Nigerian artistic talent.
