Kambani Arts of London, with major support from Cadbury Nigeria and the Heart of Africa Project, hosted expressions again, a touring exhibition of contemporary African art and children’s creative arts and writing. The tour took place in Nigeria during November 2007 and started in Abuja, moved to Kano and ended in Calabar.
Each area had
a unique Nigerian cultural theme. |

| As 2007 was the Bicentenary of the abolition of slavery, there was also an emphasis on slave history. A special trip to the slave history museum in Calabar presented a unique opportunity to learn the truth about Nigeria’s experience. Children expressed this through the creative writing workshops. They also participated in fashion, music, dance, readings and drama activities as part of the expressions experience. |

Artists were primarily unknown student talent. There was a diversity of expressive media used ranging from oil and acrylic on canvas, pen and chalk on paper and board, concrete sculptures, sandstone on wood, wood carving, metals, clay and ceramics and lots of diverse mixed media. The outcomes were incredible. Participating children came mostly from public sector schools, almost 200 children from over 20 schools in total across the three zones. Ages ranged from 7 to 16. Artists interacted directly with children and assisted them by sharing their real feelings, emotions and concepts behind each art piece. This helped motivate the children towards producing inspired written work. This work was displayed with the artwork as part of the exhibition experience. |

Children's creative arts and writing workshops took place at the start of each leg of the tour. The main art exhibition took place the following day, ending in a cultural gala in each area comprising children’s creative writing, fashion, music, dance, readings and drama activities. Travel between regions was carried out on the Nike Arts Centre bus. Abuja to Kano was a 5 hour ride, Kano to Obudu took the best part of 12 hours (after stopping over in Abuja) whilst Obudu to Calabar was just over 8 hours. The bus was fun, with the discovery of some new talent in comedy, courtesy Akanimoh Umoh who had everyone in rib breaking mode. Thankfully, journeys were otherwise uneventful. |
